History

The Department of Chemistry was founded as an independent unit in the Faculty of Pharmacy at the Medical University of Sofia in 1959. Until then the courses in inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry and physical chemistry are led by teachers from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at Sofia University. In 2010 the Department of Organic Chemistry joined the Department of Chemistry. Heads of the department since its establishment were Prof. Dimitar Trendafelov, Prof. Omortag Budevsky, DSci, Prof. Dimitria Mihailova, DSci, Prof. Darwin Ivanov, PhD.
